Hello SuRun Forum Readers!

I welcome your help in solving a problem.

Thus far, I have not been able to discover the cause of SuRun crashing after I save and/or apply SuRun menu changes while running Online Armor 4.0.0.45.

My windows XP Sp3 event viewer reports an application error caused by SuRun.exe, version 1.2.0.9 and faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5781.

The fault occurs ONLY if Online Armor is installed. The fault occurs even after OA's "HIPS" is deactivated and two reboots accomplished (an OA Forum technique). The fault occurs in Admin accounts and limited accounts.

Once Online Armor is uninstalled, SuRun operates normally and runs well with Sandboxie and Avira Premium 10 (with ProActive Guard).

Has any one experienced a similar problem?
I just installed Online Armor in a VM on XP pro x32 after SuRun 1.2.0.9b14 was installed and SuRun just worked without crashing...
Did you tell OA to "deny" something that SuRun does?

[Edit:]
I Installed OA an my work system and on my laptop.
On both systems I got big problems with OA.

My Laptop blue screens on startup and on my work system SuRun GPFs continuously...
...I then uninstalled OA.
Greetings Kay!

Thank you for responding.

No, Online Armor was was installed using the "Trust Everything" installation option.

To be more accurate, the crash occurs whenever SuRun is used to start a program with elevated rights AND/OR after saving/applying a menu change.

If I uninstall Avira Premium 10 and then run SuRun and Online Armor together as described, I get a GPF(?) (windows message stating ~Windows has encountered a problem.... Surun must close~).

Given that krnel32.dll errors indicate that software is trying to access the same memory space, is it possible that uninstalling/reinstalling Microsoft update KB 979683 could have broken something at the kernel level?

Could an erroneous file permission setting be the culprit? What permissions does SuRunexe and surun.dll need?

[Edit]: I just noticed the edited portion of your reply. It appears as though Online Armor is giving you headaches also.

Greetings Kay,

I installed a trial version of OutPost Firewall Pro 7.

I have had no additional GPFs since doing so. My rig is a Dell XPS Gen 4, Hyper Threaded, Raid O, XP Sp3 computer.

Have you, perhaps, discovered any configuration settings which will allow SuRun and Avira Antivir Premium 10 to operate alongside Online Armor 4.0.0.45 without conflicts.

If not, do you know of any other firewalls that conflict with SuRun?

Cheers,
WitsEnd
Hi WitsEnd,

Online Armor crashes my system even without SuRun. So I stopped testing.
I don't use any anti-virus tool.
I use ZoneAlarm free as firewall with no problems.

Cheers,

Kay
Hi Kay,

Danke for replying and for the info.

SuRun is one of the best, if not the most valuable XP program I am aware of.

Considering this, Online Armor will have to go, despite my paid subscription for it.

Congratulations on the genius of SuRun's development.

Cheers!

...if you paid for Online Armor, just wait for a new release.
I tested an older OA release approx. two years ago and it worked for me including SuRun.

Microsoft made developing security apps a pretty hard job.
One has to write kernel mode drivers that do undocumented stuff to block unwanted behavior.

I'm sure that Emsi Soft will work hard to make OA more compatible.

Do you know if this has been reported to Emsisoft?
I don't know if it has been reported to Emsi Soft.
