No, there's no beta anymore. ...Unless I get another bug report ;-)
I still wait for the polish language resources.

HI Kay,

I wanted to report a bug with the install of Borland BDE. I have a program that uses BDE as a database engine. It is an older program called Employee Appraiser. While installing it uses the %temp% directory to build the BDE config file and then merges the file with the final config file in C:\Program Files\Borland\Common Files\BDE\. The files is called IDAPINEW.CNFG. The install gives an error the the merge can not work. If you would like more info please let me know. I am running the install by right clicking on the setup.exe file and choosing "Start as Administrator'.

I tried to find "Employee Appraiser" to check this out.

If the program is that on "www.employeeappraiser.com"... I tried to get the free trial, but it seems to be an online only version...

Do you see any chance that I can reproduce your scenario in a virtual machine here? (Can I download a demo of the old version somewhere or can you send it to me by email?)

I will have to send you the program the setup.exe is about 12 MB in size. It is old and not available anymore. Send an email to my personal email address that I used for my registered account and I can get you a copy to test.

Hi Kay,

I think this may be related to another program I have installed on some of my test systems. It is called Online Armor. You can find the free version here: http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html. The install seems to be ok without OA installed but the "Start as Administrator" does not work with this application installed.

Hi Jeff,

I tested installing and running Employee Appraiser 5 (EAP5) with and without Online Armor.
I Installed SuRun before both apps.
The tests where run in a VMware virtual machine with a bare bones Windows XP professional SP2 english.

I could install and run EAP5 in both cases but I always needed to run it with elevated rights to work correctly.
With further investigation one can probably figure how to setup permissions to the right files and directories so EAP5 will run with standard rights.

I'll do another test tomorrow with installing SuRun after Online Armor and then installing EAP5.

Hi Kay,

FYI, I am running this on a Active Directory Domain. This is happening on every system I install it on.

One other thing that I wanted to mention. I think it would be very useful to have the option from the taskbar to run task manager as administrator. I use Sysinternal's Process Explorer as a replacement for task manager and it will not display the correct process information about services if it is run as an SuRunner.

Hi Jeff,

Unfortunately I was not able to test this in a AD-Domain. My VMware Win2k3 Terminal Server and my VMware WinXPpro refuse working together at my home PC. I'll try that at work.

Fortunately I testet the last case: Installing first Online Armor, then SuRun then EAP5 and it works on my non domain WinXPpro. To make EAP5 work without admin rights you need to set "full control" to
* C:\PDOXUSRS.NET
* %ProgramFiles%\Employee Appraiser (incl. all Subdirs)
* %WINDIR%\eap.ini

Online Armor keeps SuRun from modifying the System menu ("(Re)start as Admin") and sometimes locks the whole system, but I did not test much and I will not use it on my systems.

Online Armor asked me to allow/block SuRun modifying memory of another process if you choose "block" and "remember my decision" then SuRun will never work. Also SuRun must be allowed to start another process.

If you did that all right, I hope to reproduce the issue in my VMware mini-domain tomorrow.

That differs. In this case I used my old knowledge with BDE (Borland Paradox). It uses "C:\PDOXUSRS.NET".
The other files/folders were direct complainants by EAP5.

In other cases I mostly use SysInternals Process Monitor and Process Explorer.
In very rare cases I need a Debugger/Disassembler.

All Tests with Software that is not used by myself is done in virtual machines.

Until 2005 I worked for "SoftThinks" they do Preinstallation and Recovery systems (e.G. for Dell and HP). From that time I've got a lot of test scenarios in virtual machines to test my master boot records, CDROM boot loaders and other recovery stuff ;-)

Hi Jeff,

I tried in my mini-domain today and EAP5 worked with the following steps:
* installed "Online Armor free" as Domain Admin on local PC
* installed SuRun as Domain Admin on local PC
* installed EAP5 with SuRuns "Start as Admin" on local PC
* All questions from Online Armor regarding SuRun where answered with "Allow" and "remember my decision"
* reboot
* start EAP5 with SuRuns "Start as Admin". EAP5 creates C:\PDOXUSRS.NET in the first turn.
* closed EAP5
* Set permissions to "full control" for SuRunners for "C:\PDOXUSRS.NET", "%ProgramFiles%\Employee Appraiser" and "%WINDIR%\eap.ini"
* started EAP5 as limited user
All seems to work with the "demo" database.

I am at work so I'll keep this post short ;-)

Thank you for all your help on this issue. You're the man! I will try this on my test system. I think the part I was missing on this one was the full control on the PDOXUSRS.NET file. I didn't know this file was used by EAP. I will report my findings. Hope you have a great day.

Hi Kay,

Everything works great with this install method. One issue I have is that you have to install the software in each users profile to get it to work in a limited account. I need to get a different program for HR. Thanks for your help on this again.
